The first great field battle of the Crusades

Camping alongside a marshy, pond-filled drain of the Thymbres river, the Norman contingent led by Bohemond (Lord of Norman Sicily), his nephew Tancred, and Robert (son of the late William the Conqueror and brother to the current King of England) saw the dawn greeted by the mostly-cavalry Seljuk Turkish army of Sultan Kilij Arslan.  Swirling all around them, the Seljuk Turks poured volley upon volley of arrows and javalins into the Christian encampment.  Bohemond quickly tried to organize his army.  He sent lightly-armed pilgrims and camp followers to the rear and relative safety behind tents, wagons and the heavily-reeded areas around the marsh.  However, the Turkish arrows found many of their targets, killing by some account 2,000 Christians.
