Number of Players:  Six

Event Description:  In the summer of 1862, Confederate General Braxton Bragg launched his invasion of Kentucky .  Bragg ordered Major General Sterling Price's Army of the West to assist the invasion by distracting Union forces with an advance toward Nashville , TN.   Price occupied Iuka , MS on 14 September 1862, driving off the Union garrison and capturing Union supplies.  While Price debated his next move, Union Major General Ulysses S. Grant, commander of the District of West Tennessee, decided to act.  Departing from Corinth , MS , Grant ordered Major General William S. Rosecrans, commander of the Army of the Mississippi , to move on Iuka from the southwest while Grant accompanied Major General Edward O. C. Ord's Army of West Tennessee and approached Iuka from the northwest.  Grant's plan was to attack on 19 September 1862 from two directions to isolate, trap and destroy Price's army before Price could escape from Iuka southward on the Fulton Road.  In the event, the plan miscarried.  An "acoustic shadow" prevented Grant and Ord from hearing the battle raging on Rosecrans' southern avenue of approach and as a result, Price's Army of the West fought off Rosecrans' lone attack and then slipped away from Iuka later that night on the Fulton Road .  This scenario assumes that there was no "acoustic shadow" and both wings of Grant's forces attacked as planned.
