Event Description:  Lynchburg, Virginia's second largest city, served the Confederacy as a major hospital, logistic and transportation center.  Most of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia supply lines ran through the three railroads, James River and Kanawha Canal that converged on the city.  Grant ordered General David Hunter's Army of West Virginia to sever Lee's supply lines by capturing this vital city.  Lee reacted to this threat by detaching General Jubal Early's 2nd Corps from the battle of Cold Harbor and sent him west to combine with John C. Breckinridge's Army of Southwest Virginia becoming the new Army of the Valley.
